To gain an understanding of chiropractic, read the following taken from the California Chiropractic Association website:

"Chiropractic Defined: Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.  What is a Subluxation? A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. A subluxation is evaluated, diagnosed, and managed through the use of chiropractic procedures based on the best available rational and empirical evidence." (http://www.calchiro.org/about.html)

Whether your pain is from a back or neck injury, car accident, sports injury, disc herniation, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome or just the stresses of daily life and work, I am very confident I can help you. A Chiropractor's Nightmare

Based on a true story....

It was just another day at the office. The KOST was playing "Cool Operator" by Sade, and everyone was enjoying the serene, healing atmosphere of the clinic. The soothing trickle of the waterfall in the corner could be heard and the children were occupied by the office-supplied Nintendo DS units. It was "prime-time" which is the time most people get off work. The waiting room was full and every therapy table was taken.

Suddenly, there was a loud crashing sound as metal hit the glass doors and a writhing twisted man in a wheel barrel came barreling into the clinic lobby pushed by two husky sweaty construction workers. The injured man's painful screams drowned Sade's singing and the tranquil environment took on the atmosphere of the trauma ward of an emergency room. His name was Bentley*, a lead construction worker for a nearby construction site. He stood six-foot-four and weight about two-hundred-and-eighty pounds. With tears of pain in his eyes, disheveled hair, and his obvious lack of mobility, his massive frame was reduced to the look of a wounded bird. He was immediately rolled to a treatment room so Dr. Fred could evaluate and treat him. After a lumbar x-ray, and thorough exam, Bentley was given therapy to help manage his pain. After about twenty minutes, everything seemed fine. But it was only the calm before the storm. The real drama hadn't even begun to start.Eventually Bentley was able to lie on his stomach where he was given ice, electrical stimulation and ultrasound. A pillow was placed under his hips to make him more comfortable. After twenty more minutes the patient, laying in the prone position, was smiling and cracking jokes. Without the chiropactor touching him he was already feeling much better. That's when everything went to Hades in a hand basket.

As Bentley tried to get up, BAM! The pain in his back returned with a vengeance. So did the screaming. Only this time he directed all his pain and frustration at the doctor. "What did you do to me??!!!" "I can't even walk now" "I'm gonna sue" "Call 911!!!"Seven minutes later, Dr. Fred's peaceful healing environment turned into a major rescue scene. Not only did the police show up, there was a fire engine, paramedic and an ambulance. To make matters worse, there was one of those giant ladder fire trucks in the area that showed up as well. About ten men in blue surrounded Bentley. They took his vitals, placed him on a gurney and hauled him away. All the while Bentley was screaming profanities and threats to the poor chiropractor. As the last siren faded in the background one could here a pin drop in the office. The thirty smiling patients that were once in the office were reduced to three.

They say even bad publicity means your name is getting out there. But not in this case. It took my friend's practice weeks to rebuild from that event.

Bentley apologized. Even at the time, he knew the doctor did nothing that would have caused his pain. The patient had a severe problem with his lumbar disc from a lifting injury which resulted in muscle spasms. His weak abdominal muscles, distended abdomen, and lack of proper lifting technique was a recipe for his eminent disaster. After getting over the initial pain at the E.R., he came back to see Dr. Fred. He received chiropractic care and learned how to maintain his spinal health. He eventually became a great advocate of chiropractic care.

Taking care of our spines is like taking care of our teeth. If you brush your teeth floss, and see your dentist every six months, your teeth will last a lifetime. The same principle is true with chiropractic. In order to avoid a crisis like Bentley's, it is important to learn how to maintain and strengthen your spine. For more information about how to keep your back healthy, visit my website at www.UnitedPhysiciansHealthInstitute.comIn my sixteen years of clinical practice, I have not had the pleasure of having a patient like Bentley. But I have had my own share of very interesting and bizarre cases that perhaps one day I will share with you.

Top Secret Wellness Tips You Need To Know...

Secret Wellness Tips:

Eight out of ten people will experience significant back pain in their low backs over the coarse of their lives. Therefor the following information from my website, UnitedPhysiciansHealthInstitute.com is provided to help you live well and be well. The motions of daily life, if done incorrectly, can result in injury to the spine. The following tips can help you steer clear of that kind of pain and inconvenience and keep you feeling your best.

Exercise: The absolute most important exercise you can do for you low back to help prevent injury is crunches or half sit-ups. Back extensions and oblique strengthening is important to. Basically, a regimen of consistent core stabilization exercises is vital for keep your spine strong and healthy.

Nutrition/Supplements: For bone health I recommend everyone should be on a high-quality calcium supplement. For joint health I recommend glusocamine. For overall health, a quality multi-vitamin, flax seed oil, and fish oil are ideal.

Sitting " Choose a chair that is firm enough to support you comfortably, and don't slouch! " Sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a low footstool so that your knees are slightly higher than your hips. Sit firmly against the back of the chair. " La-z-boy chairs don't bend where you do; choose a rocker instead. " Avoid crossing your legs at the knees, which can aggravate existing back conditions and interfere with circulation to your lower limbs.

Standing " Stand with your head level. When you have to stand in one place for long periods of time, put one foot on a 4-6-inch stool to help keep pressure off your spine. " Avoid wearing high heels if you are going to be on your feet for long periods of time. Working at a Desk " Take frequent stretch breaks if you have to sit for a long time. " Sit with your knees at a 90-120-degree angle. An angled footrest may help you feel more comfortable. " Make sure your chair fits correctly. Allow for two inches between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees. " Choose a chair that tilts back so you can rest while you're reading what is on your computer screen. " Elevate materials or your computer screen to avoid neck fatigue.

Lifting " Avoid twisting and turning motions when you lift. If you have to turn to place the object, step in the direction of the turn, don't just twist at the waist. " Always bend at your knees, not your waist, when lifting anything heavier than 10 percent of your body weight (e.g., a child or heavy box). " When lifting an object, plant your feet about 12-18 inches apart, kneel or squat in front of the object, and lift as you straighten up. Be sure to lift with the big muscles of your thighs, arms, and shoulders, not with your back. " In some situations, it is difficult to lift correctly. Getting grocery bags out of the car is one such situation. The car bumper doesn't allow you to bend your knees. Bring the bag to you first and then lift carefully. " When engaging in repetitive lifting, use good lifting form, take frequent breaks, and use equipment to help whenever possible. "

To avoid tripping, be sure your path is clear before you lift the item.
Physical Activity / Household Chores " Warm up and cool down before and after physical activity like playing sports, raking, gardening, and shoveling snow. " When working with hand-held yard equipment, make sure that the machine you are using has a strap. Place the strap over your head and shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the machine and switch the machine from one side of your body to the other as often as possible. Use electric rather than gas-powered machines whenever possible; they are much lighter. " When washing dishes, open the cabinet beneath the sink, bend one knee, and put your foot on the shelf under the sink. Lean against the counter for support. " When ironing, place one foot on a small stool or a book. " When vacuuming, put all your weight on one foot, then step forward and back with the other foot as you push the vacuum. Use your back foot as a pivot when you turn.

Using the Telephone " When using the telephone, avoid cradling the receiver between your neck and shoulder. Hold the phone in your hand or use speakerphone instead. " If you use the phone a lot, use a lightweight headset. " Switch hands frequently when on the phone.

Resting/Sleeping " Don't use a sofa arm as a pillow or watch TV in bed with your head supported only by pillows; this strains your neck. " Avoid sleeping on a soft mattress or sofa. " Lie down in bed when it is time to sleep. Don't sleep in a chair or in cramped quarters. " Sleep on your side with your knees bent or on your back with a pillow under your knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. " Use a pillow that supports your head so that your neck and vertebrae are level with the rest of your spine as you sleep. Avoid sleeping on two pillows. " Be sure to get plenty of sleep every day to allow your body to rest and recuperate.

The Devil In The Dark

The Devil In The Dark•September 18, 2009 • Leave a Comment (Edit)
We get up, drive through god-forsaken traffic, work our mundane jobs, pay our bills, watch a little TV and go to bed. The next day we do basically the same thing….and the next….and the next. Now with the internet taking up our free time, we as a society have become what I call “cogs”. Part of a machine. The cumbersome machine that drives our faltering economy.
I love the movie “The Matrix” because in some ways its a parody of our own apathetic society. When Morpheous gives Neo the red pill, everything changes and Neo is able to “see” how things really are. There are very few out there like Neo. Those that think “out of the box” are not always accepted. Lincoln, Kennedy, Lennon, etc. Ask yourself a question. Are you a thinker that wants to make a change to society? Or are you a cog?
There is a devil in the darkness of our society. He is very rich and powerful and is involved in each of our lives. In many cases, he will decide if you live or die or how much time you have left. He is so powerful, that he was able to shut down the workers comp system in California and leave thousands of injured workers without the benefit of proper healthcare. He has so much influence that our current president will most likely fail with healthcare reform as so many other presidents before him. I’m talking about a true master of disguise. A wolf in sheeps clothing if you will. ”He” is the health insurance companies.
The word insurance seems so benign. However, the health insurance companies in America are some of the strongest lobbiests in the nation.
America. We can make a difference. We don’t have to be in the dark anymore when it comes to healthcare reform. We are all afraid the the death squads and the limitations put on us by the goverment. All of these are real concerns. However, stop and think. If you ever lost your benefits and then became ill, who would take care of you? Most of us are one major illness away from bankruptcy.
President Obama is on the right track. He may not have all the answers, but I believe he is trying to do something good for our nation. Imagine a society, where we had access to the finest physicians in the world. Imagine how much better our quality of life would be. I’m not asking you to join in on Mr. Obama’s mission. All I’m saying is to step out of the matrix and objectively take a close look at healthcare reform. Don’t sit on the sidelines. Contact your congressman. Your voice makes a difference.
The devil in the dark is real and will not go away easily. We must join together and come up with a solution so that our children and grandchildren will benefit from the solid reform we started now.

Hogar Para Los Ninos

One of the most memorable moments of my life occured when I volunteered my services as a chiropractor in Mexico. If you ever have felt the need to give back to others less fortunate than you, I highly recommend volunteering your time at the orphanage in Colonio Guerrero. You will never be the same.

I recall one particular trip where I went with a group of chiropractors. We flew there in single engine planes and landed on a dirt air strip. When we arrived at the orphanage, we were given their best housing and we were treated as honored guests. The work was hard, but very rewarding. We would go out to the work camps where the living conditions were unthinkable. Cardboard homes with dirt floors, kids playing with rusty toys, and no electricity or running water.

Along with providing much needed food and blankets, we would work twelve hour days adjusting hundreds and hundreds of migrant workers. We would have to have our English translated to Spanish and from Spanish to Triki, which is a dialect of the Xoacan indians.
The most rewarding part of the trip was the outreach ministry. Where ever the chiropractors would set up their portable adjusting tables, the evangelists would preach the word of God. We saw many people give their lives to God. Interestingly enough, some of the indians already had Book of Mormon bibles with them. The Morman’s had been to the camps a week before we arrived.

I haven’t been back to Baja now for a few years. But I plan to go back soon. What I brought back from all those trips were life changing experiences I will always remember. As we have in the past, again this year for Thanksgiving our office plans to do a fundraiser for the children of the orphanage. For whatever donation people contribute (clothes, canned food, etc.) they will receive their adjustment at no charge on that day!

If you would like to know more about the need in Mexico or the Foundation For His Ministry and how you can help by donating your time or sending a gift, visit the following link: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/4459780%E2%8C%A9=en-us/11951190

If You Could Save Someone's Life Without Risking Your Own, Would You Do It?

That's why Jerry Rice made this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CAsGNlQEnI If you haven't been checked by a chiropractor, give yourself an earlier christmas present. The gift of health! You don't have to be a professional athlete to get adjusted.

Imagine having the edge on your competition. From competitive athletics to getting the edge in the business world. Eliminating nerve interference from your body can help you perform at your optimum best!

If you want to feel and look old faster, live with poor posture and not have that competitive edge in your life, my advice would be not to see a chiropractor.

Is Chiropractic Care Really Safe And Does It Work?

Is Chiropractic Care Safe and Effective?

Many people don’t understand chiropractic care. Half the public think we are witch doctors and the other half just don’t like us. Much of the biased against chiropractic comes from lack of knowledge. If there was a way to significantly improve your performance and quality of life, wouldn't you want to know about it? I hope the following article from the ACA helps answer a few questions you might have:

Numerous studies have shown that chiropractic treatment is both safe and effective. The following are excerpts from a few of the more recent studies. By examining the research supporting chiropractic care, you will find that chiropractic offers tremendous potential in meeting today’s health care challenges.

For Acute and Chronic Pain
“Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.”

– Nyiendo et al (2000), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care.
– Korthals-de Bos et al (2003), British Medical Journal

In Comparison to Other Treatment Alternatives
“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”
– Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
“In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy, and continued care by a general practitioner in patients with nonspecific neck pain. The success rate at seven weeks was twice as high for the manual therapy group (68.3 percent) as for the continued care group (general practitioner). Manual therapy scored better than physical therapy on all outcome measures. Patients receiving manual therapy had fewer absences from work than patients receiving physical therapy or continued care, and manual therapy and physical therapy each resulted in statistically significant less analgesic use than continued care.”
– Hoving et al (2002), Annals of Internal Medicine

For Headaches
“Cervical spine manipulation was associated with significant improvement in headache outcomes in trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache.”
– Duke Evidence Report, McCrory, Penzlen, Hasselblad, Gray (2001)
“The results of this study show that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches… Four weeks after cessation of treatment … the patients who received spinal manipulative therapy experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in all major outcomes in contrast to the patients that received amitriptyline therapy, who reverted to baseline values.”
– Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Boline et al. (1995)
Cost Effectiveness“Chiropractic care appeared relatively cost-effective for the treatment of chronic low-back pain. Chiropractic and medical care performed comparably for acute patients. Practice-based clinical outcomes were consistent with systematic reviews of spinal manipulative efficacy: manipulation-based therapy is at least as good as and, in some cases, better than other therapeusis.”
– Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics

Patient Satisfaction
“Chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care providers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients. Results from observational studies suggested that back pain patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than with medical care. Additionally, studies conclude that patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than they were with physical therapy after six weeks.”
– Hertzman-Miller et al (2002), American Journal of Public Health
Popularity of Chiropractic“Chiropractic is the largest, most regulated, and best recognized of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) professions. CAM patient surveys show that chiropractors are used more often than any other alternative provider group and patient satisfaction with chiropractic care is very high. There is steadily increasing patient use of chiropractic in the United States, which has tripled in the past two decades.”
– Meeker, Haldeman (2002), Annals of Internal Medicine

The Gym

Before I started working out at the gym, I thought of it as a place where all the jocks and the ultra cool people hung out. I thought that if I walked in they would laugh at me and I wouldn't fit in. I was so intimidated by the thought of bald men with tattoos and huge biceps cussing and grunting. I remember my mom telling her friends how she hated seeing guys with veins popping out of their arms and I related working out to big veins.

Well, I was mistaken. The first time I went to the gym, nobody laughed at me. Nobody even looked at me despite the fact that I was wearing Addidas from head to toe. I was even sporting an Addidas towel and socks....still no laughs. Even when at the age of 26 when I could barely bench press a couple of quarters (25 pound plates) and shaking the whole time....nobody laughed. In fact, nobody even cared.

It turned out that there was a lot of narcissism at the gym. Some of the gym rats were too busy looking at themselves in the mirror, others were sweating on the treadmill while watching Oprah, and others were just like me, trying to better ourselves and not really worried about the person next to us. Yet with all the self absorption, most people would be happy to show you how to use a machine or give you pointers on lifting properly.

The gym is a great place to exercise, lose weight and get in shape. Its a modern-day phenomenon our parents did not have access to. I believe everyone should have a gym membership and workout daily.

Of coarse there are some things to watch out for when you go to the gym. Number one is safety. I don't know how many times over the years I've seen people get their lockers or their cars broken into. Never ever bring valuables to the gym or leave them in the car. Number two would be if your not going to take a shower immediately after you workout there at the gym, be sure to wash your hands. The combination of moisture and heat is a breeding ground for bacteria. I remember once reading about a locker room that had to be disinfected because of flesh-eating bacteria. Number three: wear flip-flops in the shower. In my practice I've had people take off their shoes and socks and show me their plantar warts. When I asked them where they came from well, you guessed it, from the locker room at the gym. Flip flops will also protect you from some of the strange things that people do in the showers. Just use your imagination.

I think the thing that bothers me most about the gym is the some of the individuals from the generation before mine. I don't know where they learned this, but for some strange reason they think its okay to brush their teeth or walk around the locker room in their birthday suites! I think by the time you reach a certain age you really don't care what people think or you don't know what you're doing.

In summary, although I've painted a picture of a bacteria riddled environment filled with narcissistic geriatric naked people, the fact is this. If you take the right precautions and have the right additude, the gym is a great place to get in shape and to stay fit. I encourage you to call your local gym and schedule a tour. Find one that is right for you. If you have the money, I would suggest Equinox for its cleanliness, clientele and amenities. If your interested getting the maximum performance with your exercise routine, I would also suggest finding a good chiropractor. Most professional atheletes use chiropractors to help them perform at their very best. For more information about chiropractic and staying healthy, sign up for my free newsletter at www. DMV vs. Swine Flu

If you ever want to see the ultimate example of an inefficient, pathetic state managed agency, visit your local DMV. My experience was nothing short of a disaster. I arrived early hoping to beat the crowds but it was to no avail. The parking lot was completely full and the residential streets in the area had harsh warning signs equivalent to having your car crushed and melted down if you dared to park remotely close to the DMV. After hiking a few blocks, I arrived to a sea of homo-sapiens. At least I think they were human. Did I come on Neanderthal day? Or is it possible that mankind is de-evolving?

After standing in a long line with a confused look on may face, I was given number G138. Yes, I know I should have had an appointment, but my license had just expired and I couldn't wait two weeks. Anyway, I was lucky enough to find a seat between Jabba and Jar-Jar Binks. Fortunately, I was prepared with a good book. But after an hour and a half of sitting there I was literally going stark crazy. When the main computer shut down for a half hour I almost lost my mind. It takes a special kind of person to work at the DMV and I applaud those civil servants for their hard work.

So its just shy of three hours when I get to get my photo taken. Everyone in front of me took their photo looking like they were on America's Most Wanted. But I had to be different. So when the clerk said, :I'm ready to take your photo". I tried to picture myself by the ocean walking on the beach on a warm sunny day. I fooled myself long enough to manage a pretty decent, tooth bearing smile.

My experience today was horrible. I'm not sure which is worse, dealing with the DMV or contracting the swine flu. Who knows, with my luck I may have been exposed to both.

Does Your MD Believe In Chiropractic?

When patients come to my office some of them say, "I saw my doctor and he said I shouldn't get chiropractic care." Even after all these years, hearing comments like that frustrate me. There is still a lot of ignorance in the medical profession with respect to chiropractic care. Frankly, a lot of the prejudice against my profession has to do with money. If chiropractors can help without the use of drugs and surgery, we are considered "competition" to the medical profession. The truth is, chiropractic is not competing with your doctor at all. Basicially its a natural way of allowing the body to perform at its optimum level by helping to remove intereference from the nervous system.

In my office when its appropriate, we refer to orthopedists, neurologists, pain management, internal medicine, podiatry and other healthcare specialists. I believe physicians should work together with the goal of providing the best care possible for our patients. Be aware of chiropractors who think they are M.D.s or those who use methods not endorsed by the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, ACA or CCA. Always get a referral from a satisfied patient before you visit a chiropractor.

The tide of change is slow, but with overwhelming research supporting the benefits of chiropractic, M.D.'s are now working hand in hand with chiropractors. I found this article to be a good summary medicine's current attitude about chiropractic. http://chiropracticreport.com/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=

A Shot Of Inspiration...

Last night I met a man who had no arms or legs. I was so moved and inspired by what he has done with his life despite his disability. If Nick Vujicic can accomplish so much without limbs, how much more can we accomplish in our own lives?

After seeing Nick, I realized whatever challenges I have in my life are nothing compared to his. Yet, he has a passion for life that is truly inspirational. Sometimes its important for people like Nick to cross our lives to realize how blessed we really are and how thankful we should be.

How To Select The Best Chiropractor

By: Kelly Andrews, DC
Chiropractic manipulation is a recognized and popular pain relief treatment, with an estimated 6% to 12% of the U.S. population seeking care each year, according to a 2007 study. Given the current U.S. population (more than 306 million people), that could mean anywhere from 18 million to 36 million chiropractic visits in 2009.
Because chiropractic is a profession with a large variety of practice philosophies and techniques, selecting a good chiropractor can be a challenge.

When looking for a chiropractor, a good place to start is to ask your primary care physician or spine specialist for the names of chiropractors who appear competent and trustworthy. It also helps to ask friends, co-workers and neighbors for recommendations.
Exercise caution however, because one person’s definition of a good chiropractor may be quite different from another person’s definition. In general, if multiple resources recommend the same chiropractor, chances are good that the chiropractor is reliable.
While recommendations can be valuable, it is also important to find a practitioner who can meet an individual’s specific needs. This article includes guidelines of questions to ask when interviewing a chiropractor that can help assess the skills, qualifications and style of the chiropractor. Before starting treatment with a chiropractor, it is usually best to conduct a telephone interview or request an office consultation to find out more about how he or she practices.
