I have a deep respect for you, because by reading this, you are clearly demonstrating your individual commitment to helping your body feel and look better naturally.

For over two decades as a chiropractic student and as a board certified chiropractor, I have passionately dedicated my life to helping others live better lives through natural chiropractic care. In that time, I've synthesized some fundamental tools and strategies to help maximize and achieve my goals of educating my patients on the benefits of natural chiropractic care.

I have also come to realize that without our health, we have nothing. Money, prestige, power, none of it matters when you don't have your health. The importance of our physical health is undeniable, and so at my free weekly workshops you will learn what more than twenty years has taught me - the basic principles of optimal health. My goal is to open your eyes and give you the opportunity to lean how to live at a level of optimal health, energy, and vitality.

To gain an understanding of chiropractic, read the following taken from the California Chiropractic Association website:

"Chiropractic Defined: Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.  What is a Subluxation? A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. A subluxation is evaluated, diagnosed, and managed through the use of chiropractic procedures based on the best available rational and empirical evidence." (http://www.calchiro.org/about.html)

Whether your pain is from a back or neck injury, car accident, sports injury, disc herniation, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome or just the stresses of daily life and work, I am very confident I can help you. There is always room in your life for thinking bigger, not taking other's word for it, and imagining a life without pain and having optimal health. A Chiropractor's Nightmare

Based on a true story....

It was just another day at the office. The KOST was playing "Cool Operator" by Sade, and everyone was enjoying the serene, healing atmosphere of the clinic. The soothing trickle of the waterfall in the corner could be heard and the children were occupied by the office-supplied Nintendo DS units. It was "prime-time" which is the time most people get off work. The waiting room was full and every therapy table was taken.

Suddenly, there was a loud crashing sound as metal hit the glass doors and a writhing twisted man in a wheel barrel came barreling into the clinic lobby pushed by two husky sweaty construction workers. The injured man's painful screams drowned Sade's singing and the tranquil environment took on the atmosphere of the trauma ward of an emergency room. His name was Bentley*, a lead construction worker for a nearby construction site. He stood six-foot-four and weight about two-hundred-and-eighty pounds. With tears of pain in his eyes, disheveled hair, and his obvious lack of mobility, his massive frame was reduced to the look of a wounded bird. He was immediately rolled to a treatment room so Dr. Fred could evaluate and treat him. After a lumbar x-ray, and thorough exam, Bentley was given therapy to help manage his pain. After about twenty minutes, everything seemed fine. But it was only the calm before the storm. The real drama hadn't even begun to start.Eventually Bentley was able to lie on his stomach where he was given ice, electrical stimulation and ultrasound. A pillow was placed under his hips to make him more comfortable. After twenty more minutes the patient, laying in the prone position, was smiling and cracking jokes. Without the chiropactor touching him he was already feeling much better. That's when everything went to Hades in a hand basket.

As Bentley tried to get up, BAM! The pain in his back returned with a vengeance. So did the screaming. Only this time he directed all his pain and frustration at the doctor. "What did you do to me??!!!" "I can't even walk now" "I'm gonna sue" "Call 911!!!"Seven minutes later, Dr. Fred's peaceful healing environment turned into a major rescue scene. Not only did the police show up, there was a fire engine, paramedic and an ambulance. To make matters worse, there was one of those giant ladder fire trucks in the area that showed up as well. About ten men in blue surrounded Bentley. They took his vitals, placed him on a gurney and hauled him away. All the while Bentley was screaming profanities and threats to the poor chiropractor. As the last siren faded in the background one could here a pin drop in the office. The thirty smiling patients that were once in the office were reduced to three.

They say even bad publicity means your name is getting out there. But not in this case. It took my friend's practice weeks to rebuild from that event.

Bentley apologized. Even at the time, he knew the doctor did nothing that would have caused his pain. The patient had a severe problem with his lumbar disc from a lifting injury which resulted in muscle spasms. His weak abdominal muscles, distended abdomen, and lack of proper lifting technique was a recipe for his eminent disaster. After getting over the initial pain at the E.R., he came back to see Dr. Fred. He received chiropractic care and learned how to maintain his spinal health. He eventually became a great advocate of chiropractic care.

Taking care of our spines is like taking care of our teeth. If you brush your teeth floss, and see your dentist every six months, your teeth will last a lifetime. The same principle is true with chiropractic. In order to avoid a crisis like Bentley's, it is important to learn how to maintain and strengthen your spine. For more information about how to keep your back healthy, visit my website at www.UnitedPhysiciansHealthInstitute.comIn my sixteen years of clinical practice, I have not had the pleasure of having a patient like Bentley. But I have had my own share of very interesting and bizarre cases that perhaps one day I will share with you.

Sitting " Choose a chair that is firm enough to support you comfortably, and don't slouch! " Sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a low footstool so that your knees are slightly higher than your hips. Sit firmly against the back of the chair. " La-z-boy chairs don't bend where you do; choose a rocker instead. " Avoid crossing your legs at the knees, which can aggravate existing back conditions and interfere with circulation to your lower limbs.

Standing " Stand with your head level. When you have to stand in one place for long periods of time, put one foot on a 4-6-inch stool to help keep pressure off your spine. " Avoid wearing high heels if you are going to be on your feet for long periods of time. Working at a Desk " Take frequent stretch breaks if you have to sit for a long time. " Sit with your knees at a 90-120-degree angle. An angled footrest may help you feel more comfortable. " Make sure your chair fits correctly. Allow for two inches between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees. " Choose a chair that tilts back so you can rest while you're reading what is on your computer screen. " Always bend at your knees, not your waist, when lifting anything heavier than 10 percent of your body weight (e.g., a child or heavy box). " When lifting an object, plant your feet about 12-18 inches apart, kneel or squat in front of the object, and lift as you straighten up. Be sure to lift with the big muscles of your thighs, arms, and shoulders, not with your back. " In some situations, it is difficult to lift correctly. Getting grocery bags out of the car is one such situation. The car bumper doesn't allow you to bend your knees. Bring the bag to you first and then lift carefully. " When engaging in repetitive lifting, use good lifting form, take frequent breaks, and use equipment to help whenever possible. "

To avoid tripping, be sure your path is clear before you lift the item.
Physical Activity / Household Chores " Warm up and cool down before and after physical activity like playing sports, raking, gardening, and shoveling snow. " When working with hand-held yard equipment, make sure that the machine you are using has a strap. Place the strap over your head and shoulder on the opposite side of your body from the machine and switch the machine from one side of your body to the other as often as possible. Use electric rather than gas-powered machines whenever possible; they are much lighter. " When washing dishes, open the cabinet beneath the sink, bend one knee, and put your foot on the shelf under the sink. Lean against the counter for support. " When ironing, place one foot on a small stool or a book. " When vacuuming, put all your weight on one foot, then step forward and back with the other foot as you push the vacuum. Use your back foot as a pivot when you turn.

Using the Telephone " When using the telephone, avoid cradling the receiver between your neck and shoulder. Hold the phone in your hand or use speakerphone instead. " If you use the phone a lot, use a lightweight headset. " Switch hands frequently when on the phone.

Resting/Sleeping " Don't use a sofa arm as a pillow or watch TV in bed with your head supported only by pillows; this strains your neck. " Avoid sleeping on a soft mattress or sofa. " Lie down in bed when it is time to sleep. Don't sleep in a chair or in cramped quarters. " Sleep on your side with your knees bent or on your back with a pillow under your knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. " Use a pillow that supports your head so that your neck and vertebrae are level with the rest of your spine as you sleep. Avoid sleeping on two pillows. " Be sure to get plenty of sleep every day to allow your body to rest and recuperate.
