Whiplash from Auto Accident Trauma: Neck, Low back Pain HELPED! Dr. Sal...

Following a whiplash auto accident injury, it is important to get checked by a chiropractor even if you don't have pain.  Sometimes pain does not present itself right away.  It may take several days to several weeks until the full manifestation of the accident becomes apparent.  Getting a check-up soon after an accident will help determine the extent of your injuries, if any.  Another reason you should get in for a check-up soon after a collision is because in the event that the pain presents itself later, the adjuster may argue that there was never any medical documentation of a possible injury and then use that against you in a settlement.  In fact many attorneys I know will not accept a case if the client waited more than two weeks to seek medical care.  For more information feel free to contact Dr. Salse at drsalse@salsechiropractic.com.

Can Whiplash Pain Be Alleviated With Chiropractic?

One BIG mistake people make after being in a car accident.

Many Californians are under the illusion that they have enough auto insurance coverage.  For example, if someone hits your vehicle and they do not have insurance, your insurance will not pay for the damage unless you have UM  or uninsured insurance coverage.  Uninsured motorist coverage in most cases will protect you however, if there are no witnesses or a police report, your insurance company may question the validity of your accident and may not pay.  Therefor, if you are hit by another vehicle be sure to pull out you phone camera and get statements from witnesses if possible.  Filing a police report, taking pictures of the vehicles, and getting a video statement from the other driver help as well.  If you have more questions, feel free to email me at drsalse@salsechiropractic.com

In case you need another reason to snuggle your pup: According to a new study of more than 3.4 million people, owning a dog is linked to a longer life. The research, published in Scientific Reports, is the latest in a growing body of research suggesting that canine companions may be good for human health—especially for people who live alone.
They’re cute, cuddly and never argue with us. Our pets also can help us live healthier lives for a number of reasons, with stress reduction being a major one. Exercise, yoga and meditation help many people de-stress but spending time with our pets is another habit that’s good for the body and soul.
Our animals show us unconditional love and are there for support during good times and bad. They also are the ideal workout companion. With dogs, in particular, you can walk them, run with them or have them retrieve a ball.
If you have allergies, consider getting fish or a hypoallergenic animal. Watching fish swim in a bowl or aquarium is profoundly relaxing and can lower stress levels.
Of course, another excellent way to reduce stress is with chiropractic care as it helps to reduce muscle tension and keep your nervous system healthy.

MUSCLE SPASMS? HERE IS WHAT TO DO NOW.

You reach for an item on the top shelf of the cupboard and your back wrenches in pain as a muscle goes into spasm. The pain is excruciating and you can barely move. How could something as simple as reaching for a towel produce such pain?
The answer is – it didn’t. Reaching for the towel overextended a muscle that was already strained. This made the muscle stiffen and go into spasm to protect it from any further harm. Muscles can become strained due to repetitive movements or habits, such as poor posture, heavy lifting, swinging a racquet or sitting in front of a computer.
Often, when muscles have been strained for some time, all it takes is one sudden movement (i.e., one stretch for a towel) for an already strained muscle to go into spasm. When this happens, all the muscle fibers contract at the same time. Muscle contraction cuts off blood supply, which creates even more muscle pain, causing the muscle to contract even further. This is an all too common occurrence for some people who lie on the floor in pain for hours because the muscle doesn’t relax with movement.
Help for Your Muscle Spasms
It can take several weeks for a muscle spasm to subside, so try the following to help the healing process.
Rest.
Apply ice/heat and try massage therapy to assist in pain relief.
Since a lack of magnesium, calcium and water are thought to provoke muscle spasms, increasing your intake of all three may help as well.
Seek chiropractic care.
Chiropractic care helps to alleviate the cause of muscle spasm once it is present as well as helping to prevent it from occurring in the first place! Proper nerve function is essential to proper muscle function, and chiropractic adjustments locate and correct areas of the spine where there is nerve dysfunction. (https://goo.gl/WhvBu9)

What’s Really Causing Your Back Pain?

When back pain happens to you, it’s a far cry from enjoyable. And while no one likes to experience it, the pain itself is actually quite common. In fact, nearly every adult in the world has experienced back pain at some point during his or her life. But in many cases, back pain doesn’t actually begin in your back.
So, where does it start? Take a look at a few options that could be responsible for your back pain.
Hip Misalignment
Back pain
Back pain often begins in other parts of the body.
Do you ever feel like you’re taking uneven steps? Frequently carrying a heavy bag to one side, poor posture, and not wearing supportive shoes can all contribute to hip misalignment leading to low back pain. Misaligned hips often begin as a result of weak back, core or pelvis muscles and uneven shoe wear.
Text-Neck
In today’s world, it seems that we’re all guilty of spending at least some amount of time each day looking down at our smart phones or tablets. Unfortunately, too much of this downward tilt can cause pain in your neck from overstretching tissue and muscles, eventually leading to spinal misalignment. Back pain as a result of text-neck is a compensation reaction, with the real issue being the neck.
Teenagers and younger children face the highest risk for suffering from symptoms of text-neck.
Prolonged Sitting
If you spend most of your day behind a desk, you could find yourself sitting for hours on end without much movement. Prolonged sitting compresses the spine and increases stress on the back, legs, arms and even neck. To combat back pain caused by long periods of sitting, set an alarm to remind yourself to get up and move every hour. Choosing an ergonomic chair, keyboard, and mouse pad for your work space can also benefit your health.
Chiropractic may not be appropriate for you, but given it’s effectiveness, isn’t it worth at least a chance to find out?https://goo.gl/Z8j79V

ARE YOU STRESSED OUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

‘Tis the season…for stress!
While thinking of others as the holiday’s approach might be your top priority, it’s also important to consider your own physical and mental health. Here are a few ways to manage stress brought on by the holidays.
1. Exercise. Sometimes, the holiday season can throw us off of our usual schedule. Do your best to maintain your regular fitness routine.
2. Watch what you’re eating. While most of us love holiday food, it’s important that we don’t over-indulge. Choose options high in Vitamin C to keep your immune system thriving.
3. Take a breather. There’s nothing wrong with taking a “time out” from a gathering when you need it.
4. Visit our practice. Having an adjustment can keep physical and mental exhaustion at bay.  When you stop by ask about our popular wellness plans.  Hundreds of our patients are making chiropractic part of their lifestyles.   https://goo.gl/d9PM1E

Meet Dr. David M. Salse, D.C.

Meet Dr. David M. Salse, D.C.

Changing My Path

I didn’t know the first thing about chiropractic until a car accident injury made me think it might be worth a try! Attending California State Polytechnic University, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. It was while I was working as a chemist I was involved in a horrific accident that would eventually lead me to chiropractic.
My car was rear-ended, and I received a whiplash injury. At the time, I thought the intense, sharp pain would go away, but it didn’t. Medication helped but when it wore off I felt sore and miserable again. Luckily, a friend talked me into seeing a chiropractor.  arms crossed ps3

Giving Chiropractic a Try

I didn’t have any knowledge or previous experience with chiropractic, which made me somewhat afraid and skeptical of it. Since the medical options weren’t working though, I thought maybe chiropractic would be worth a try. I went to see a chiropractor and was surprised to find that he was really nice and caring, not the new age fringe practitioner I’d expected! He took X-rays, explained the treatment plan, and gave me my first adjustment.
I couldn’t believe the results! Fifty percent of my pain went away instantly! It was about more than pain relief, though — overall, I felt incredible. It was a profound experience for me.
It was at that moment I knew I wanted to help others live better lives with chiropractic.

Becoming a Natural Health Practitioner

After the accident I started researching chiropractic and realized a natural approach to health and healing made perfect sense. As fate would have it, my job as a chemist was located just a few short blocks away from the Southern California University of Health Sciences. I was accepted to chiropractic college and graduated with honors in 1993.

An Evolving Passion for Chiropractic

Dr. Salse’s chiropractic college education gave him a medical foundation on which to base his care. Over time, he met other chiropractors and traveled a great deal, which helped him to develop his passion for chiropractic. Dr. Salse is a board-certified chiropractor and is certified to perform Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA).
He has traveled throughout the country, training with the best chiropractors in the profession. The extensive training and education he received allowed him to enhance his skills and embrace the chiropractic philosophy of natural healing. “Over the years, I’ve become more and more passionate about my profession. It is my mission to have as many people in my community as possible experience the benefits of natural chiropractic.”
“How do I know that chiropractic works? Because not only has it helped me, I see people who have given up hope regain their health through natural chiropractic!”

Serving the Monrovia Community

Dr. Salse was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. He enjoys serving the people of his community to reach better health. He is the founder and CEO of the United Physicians Health Institute, a premier exhibitor for major corporate health fairs from throughout California. Through the Institute, he provided corporate employees with education and training in pain management using TENS technology.

Living a Busy Life

When he’s not at the office, Dr. Salse enjoys spending quality time with his five children. He also enjoys camping, hiking, biking, reading, playing guitar, traveling, going to church and the movies.

Better Than Advil? What Your Doctor Might Not Be Telling You.

If  you  or someone you know is suffering from chronic or acute pain right now, please read on.
Imagine owning a small, portable high-tech wearable device the size of your phone that not only takes most if not all of your pain away, but keeps it away.  This technology is extremely effective, non-addictive, natural, safe, and has been approved by the FDA for years.
No more trips to the chiropractor or physical therapist for therapy.  No more visits to the pharmacy to have your pain medication prescriptions refilled.  No more sense of hopelessness and depression.
You can now do the things you only wished you could do before.  Imagine being more productive at work because your back, neck and shoulders don't feel achy any more.   Perhaps you like to play sports, instead of watching from the sidelines you are now able to play.   Day to day activities you used to take  for granted like driving, gardening, cleaning your house, or even exercising are now possible.
The technology is called T.E.N.S..  It's an acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.  Used properly, it can virtually eliminate many types of neuromusculoskeletal pain and discomfort from the body.  Its important to note that this technology is not a cure, but a unique type of pain management.  You should talk to a qualified healthcare professional before using TENS.  How does it work?  There are basically two theories.
1. The Endorphin Theory: Electrical impulses within the body activate the release of endorphins, our own natural painkillers. An external stimulus will mimic our own reaction to pain and release endorphins accordingly.
2. The Gate Theory: Like rubbing something painful to dull the pain, the sensation of TENS uses the same pathways to the brain as the pain. If the TENS stimulation sensation gets to the brain before the pain signal, the pain signal is essentially blocked.
As I consult with corporate employees up and down the coast I get asked, "So why didn't my doctor tell me about this?"  To be fair, most primary care doctors are simply not educated in TENS technology. Therefor they do not know how or when it is appropriate to use.  Other doctors are very busy and don't have the time to screen, train, and educate after prescribing a TENS unit.  Yet there are other doctors that know the benefits of TENS but choose not to prescribe them.  If a patient can manage their pain on their own, they won't need to come in for follow-up visits or therapy.  Unfortunately, for some doctors, healthcare is strictly a business and prescribing TENS units means less chiropractic visits, less physical therapy, less epidurals, and less medication.
Whatever the reason your doctor has not recommended TENS to address your ongoing pain is now in the past.  What is important is that you found this article and now you can do something about managing your pain on your own.
Here are just of few of the corporations who have trusted my office to help their employees with pain management:
Costco, Bank of America, Disney, Boeing, Ratheon, LAX, Technip, Technicolor, Sketchers, The Ritz Carlton, Radisson Hotels, Hilton Hotels, Amtrak, Baxter Pharmaceuticals, Hologic/Genprobe, Kia, Toyota, Yum Inc., Tokyo-Marine, Bose, Gulfstream, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Anheuser Busch,  L3 Communications, Bio-Rad, Alcoa, Siemans Healthcare Diagnostics, Quest Diagnostics, Pierce College, Relativity Media, Autozone, UPS, PPG Aerospace, Paramount, Mission College, L.A. City College, Helix Medical, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Cannon, Aramark, Methodist Hospital, The Bicycle Club, Isuzu, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Green Dot, Wet Design, Sheraton Hotels, One Lamda and The ILWU  Longshoreman.
Can I just purchase a TENS online on my own?
Some of the smaller more mild units don’t require a prescription and can be bought online through ecommerce retailers of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation devices, while other, more effective units will need doctor approval before they can be purchased.  I do not recommend purchasing your TENS unit online.  Unless you have experience with one, you want a trained healthcare professional to make sure you have the right unit with the the right settings for the best results.
Will my insurance cover TENS?
We have found that TENS is a benefit on most PPO insurance plans.  These units require a constant supply of batteries and electrodes which are also covered by insurance.  Another benefit of using your insurance is that your healthcare provider will screen you to see if TENS is appropriate for you.  There are some health issues where TENS would not be indicated.  Finally, being properly trained in how to use your new TENS unit is important.  Where should I place the electrodes and how do I care for them?   What settings are most effective?  How long and how often can I use it?
What if my insurance does not cover TENS?
Our office carries the most effective units on the market.  You can purchase your new TENS unit through our office.  The price includes includes a consultation, evaluation, screening, and training on how to use your TENS unit most effectively for years to come.
_________________________________________________________________
If you would like to find out more about TENS units, give my office a call to set up a one-on-one consultation.  HR Directors: If you would like one of my associates to come to your company for a Lunch and Learn or for a corporate health fair, contact us.   TENS may not be appropriate for you.  But isn't worth the chance to find out?

Methodist Hospital In Arcadia Answers The Question, What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a therapy that involves adjusting the spinal column (back). This adjustment improves posture, blood flow, and nerves.
In 1895 Daniel Palmer saw a man who became deaf shortly after an upper neck injury. Palmer examinedthe patient’s neck and noticed one of the vertebra (bone in back) was out of place. He forcefully moved the vertebra back into place and the man’s hearing returned after 17 years of deafness. This experience led Palmer to develop the chiropractic system and a school to teach chiropractic medicine.
Chiropractic means manual (hands on) practice. It is based on the idea that the spine is very important to one’s health. A poorly functioning spine causes problems in the nervous system. A weak nervous system can cause a variety of illnesses, headache, asthma, and muscle, urinary, and digestive problems.
The nervous system regulates and controls the functions of organs in the body. Chiropractors believe that correcting the problems in the spine will correct nervous system problems. The body will heal the illness and prevent future diseases when the nervous system is properly working.
The spinal column has 33 vertebra that protect the spinal cord. Nerves leave the spinal cord between the vertebra and travel to the muscles, bones, organs and glands throughout the body and direct their actions. If the vertebrae are not in the right position, they can pinch or pull on a nerve and block the electrical signals that travel to the rest of the body.
Problems in the spine can also affect a patient’s posture. A lower back problem may cause a person to lean forward. This poor posture may limit the movement of the rib cage and cause heart or lung problems. It may also cause strain in the neck muscles causing to strain, spasms, headaches, poor vision, or balance problems.
The main feature of a chiropractic treatment is called an adjustment. The chiropractor adjusts the joint by forcefully pushing the bone into the proper position. The adjustment is often heard as a painless click or pop. Some chiropractors adjust using non-force techniques that gently and slowly correct the position of the bones without the pop. Another chiropractic technique uses an Activator, which is a small rubber tipped tool that gently moves the vertebra.
A first visit to a chiropractor may be one hour and follow up visits may take 10 to 30 minutes. During the first visit, the chiropractor will ask you many questions about your health and examine you. Your posture will be checked and the chiropractor will watch you bend your back. He will feel the tension of the muscles that move the spine. X-rays may be done to help diagnose the problem.
There are about 50,000 chiropractors in theUnited States. They have four years of training and must passa national exam to be licensed to practice. Some chiropractors have additional training in sports medicine, nutrition, acupuncture, or massage techniques.Scientific studies have proven that chiropractic treatments are effective for low back pain. The agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) recently named chiropractic as the preferred method of treatment for relief of acute back pain. Chiropractic therapy may be helpful in the treatment of addictions.
Chiropractors have successfully treated muscle and joint pain, headaches, asthma, allergies, numbness, and disc, digestive, and urinary problems.Chiropractic is not recommended for osteoporosis, bone or joint infections, bone tumors, or diseases of thespinal cord or bone marrow. Patients with a surgically fused spine, recent broken bones, or ligament damage should not be forcefully adjusted. See your medical doctor if you have pain that does not improve after chiropractic care. Your pain may be caused by a more serious problem. The chiropractor will send you to a medical doctor if a tumor, fracture, or other non-chiropractic problem is seen on x-ray.

Chiropractor in Monrovia : Dr David M. Salse, D.C.

Providing the San Gabriel Valley with inspiration and a fresh approach to chiropractic care

                     David M. Salse, DC
Dr. Salse (chiropractor) grew up where everyone he knew would take a pill for whatever pain or ailment they had.  A generation away from crop pickers, his family had no knowledge of alternative healthcare or proper nutrition.   Ding Dongs, Lucky Charms, Swanson's TV dinners, and lots of candy were common in his family.  It wasn't until he was enrolled in chiropractic school did he learn about proper nutrition and all of the amazing benefits his future profession had to offer.  He began to exercise, eat right and get regular adjustments.  Some of the most profound lessons he learned in school were, "Healthy people don't get sick" and "The power that made the body, heals the body" as well as our bodies heal from "Above down, inside out."  Although most people seeking chiropractic care for the first time are generally seeking pain relief, Dr. Salse and his staff educate their patients.  He wants them to understand that true healing comes from within and that by removing nerve interference, the body can many times heal itself.
"Our purpose is to help as many people as possible get well and stay well through natural chiropractic care.  That my mission,” Dr Salse says.

“A referral based practice?”

The other day, I asked a new patient, "How did you find me."  She smiled, opened her purse and pulled out a tattered, dog-eared business card of mine that was barely readable.  She said, "A friend of mine gave this to me five years ago and told me if I ever needed help to come here."  Most people I see as patients have not been able to find the solutions they seek from their doctors and are referred to me by their friends and family.  In fact, that is the secret to our success here in Monrovia.  Without satisfied patients telling others, we would no longer be in business.  A sign of a good chiropractor is the number of referrals he or she receives.  To read what people are saying about our office from around the web, visit "Real Chiropractor - Real Reviews"“ .  Here at Salse Chiropractic Center we take care of our patients as if they are my own family.  We go out of our way to make sure they receive the absolute best chiropractic care available in the San Gabriel Valley and in fact, Southern California.  Our efforts have paid off.  Visit RateMDs.comand you will see that they have rated our office number one for chiropractic care in the San Gabriel Valley.
People often ask me what I love about my work. The answer is that its not work at all.  Coming to the office each day is something I look forward to.  My patients to me are somewhat of an extended family and I enjoy not only helping them get healthy but to get to know them as a person and not just a patient.  Our office is much different than a medical doctors office.  Here you see smiling faces and a helpful staff.  We have great patients and a great atmosphere.  Some patients call it their "home away from home."  In fact some of our wellness patients have been coming to see me since 1993!

It's not a job; it’s what I do and who I am...

As a young man, I was a victim of a rear end auto accident in which the other driver fled the scene.  I know what it feels like to have whiplash.  At first I took medication, but it would only take the pain away for a short period of time.  Then a friend of mine recommend I see a chiropractor.  I was extremely skeptical and a bit frightened.  I thought the pain would go away and that I could "tough it out" 'cause I was a guy and that's what us guys do, but the pain was too much of a motivating factor.  With that first adjustment, my life changed forever.  When Dr. Sharpe adjusted me, I immediately felt my bones go back into alignment.  The pinching feeling was gone and I felt so much better.  As a pre-med student at Cal Poly, I had my heart set on medical school.  But that experience inspired me to enroll in chiropractic college.  Since then, I have had the privilege of helping over 20,000 people live better, healthier lives through chiropractic care.  Some of them you may know of.  I have helped professional athletes, actors, singers, business owners, elected officials, teachers, other doctors and many more.  My youngest patient has been one day old and my oldest patient has been one-hundred years old.  I have been truly blessed to be able to help so many.

Chiropractic allows me to function at my best

I have found that chiropractic care is more than just getting adjusted, it's a lifestyle.  At first I was resistant to change as old habits are hard to break.  I found I was addicted to sugar and that took a while to get under control.  The chiropractic lifestyle is very similar to how our ancestors lived.  Exercise, healthy food, clean living and avoiding harmful medication whenever possible.  I have seen my own body improve so much with chiropractic. As I experienced these powerful personal changes I knew that I wanted to be a chiropractor and help others to experience these changes for themselves.

A unique approach to care

The common meeting ground between the chiropractor and a new patient is pain.  They come with pain, find resolution to their symptoms and often understand that they can live in a place that is not just pain free, but a place where their body thrives and radiates with life. Let us help you to experience life in this place.  For some, the change is instantaneous, for others it takes time for the body to recover, renew and regenerate.  Like peeling the layers of an onion and sometimes with baby steps we move forward toward optimal health.
I tell all my patients, "I can't do this alone." The key to recovery and lasting change is TEAMWORK!  As our profession continually grows and changes we are beginning to see that those who participate in their care achieve a new level of results that we couldn’t have dreamed of before; they are literally redefining their world as we redefine the response their body has to the new world they live in. They are an integral part of their recovery and journey to better health.

Passion to help others reach their innate potential

David and his children: Jonathan, Jenelle, Jeannine, James and David Jr.

As a father, I am fortunate to be able to share the chiropractic lifestyle with my children.  Now that they are getting older I see them making their own healthy choices with diet and nutrition.  Since I've been practicing for so long, I now see generations of the same family come in to see me.  Just last week, one of my patients brought her grandma in for care.  What was nice to see, was her other grandmother and her mom were patients as well.

Perhaps you or someone you know has been suffering in pain.  Your tired of the pills, shots, tests and procedures and are wondering if there is any hope.  I invite you to discover chiropractic today.  This type of care may not be right for you...but isn't worth a chance to find out?
